Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson: June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962) was an actress and model who became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950’s and a major popular culture icon. Monroe overcame a difficult childhood to become a major movie star, with her films grossing more than $200 million dollars. Some of her most notable films include The Seven Year Itch, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Some Lit it Hot, and The Misfits. Monroe died of a drug overdose on August 5, 1962, at only 36 years old.
