Richard Milhous Nixon (January 3, 1913 – April 22, 1994) was the 37th President of the United States from 1969 to 1974. He served eight years as Vice President under Dwight Eisenhower, and waged an unsuccessful presidential campaign against John F. Kennedy in 1960. He was elected President in 1968, defeating Hubert Humphrey. Nixon ended American involvement in Vietnam in 1973 and ended the military draft. He was reelected in 1972, defeating George McGovern. On August 9, 1974, he resigned the presidency in the face of almost certain impeachment and removal from office related to the Watergate scandal.
